Hubbards, originally a thriving fishing community, received an economic boost during the Cold War, when a naval radio station was installed at Mill Cove in 1967. However, in the 1990s, the station was downgraded and CFS Mill Cove was no longer a major employer in the Hubbards area.

One man, J.D. Shatford, a Hubbards resident from birth, died in the late 1950s, but with his death came great success to Hubbards. He left a large trust fund to Hubbards that would help students receive trust funds and bursaries for post-secondary education. The J.D. Shatford Memorial Library was built with the funds he left behind and the town began to prosper. Addition buildings funded by Mr. Shatford include the Hubbards fire hall, two churches and various other facilities.

Hubbards is an inviting tourist attraction, located just 52 km (32.3 mi.) west of Halifax. Hubbards is home to three beaches, a water-park, gardens, hiking tours, biking tours and other various guided tours. As well, boat, canoe and kayak rentals are available. Hubbards is a great place to simply relax and enjoy the sights.

Hubbards accommodations include bed and breakfasts, inns, cottages, suites and campgrounds.
